I spent most of the month house-sitting for a friend who sleeps next to the ashes of her husband so I ended up spending a lot of time with the guy. It got me thinking a lot about how much the dead and the entities who watch over them have helped me along my magic(k)al journey. I got a bit of an urge to reconnect with the world of the dead so I decided to astral project to the underworld. I lay down on my couch, wrapped myself in a cotton sheet, and crossed my arms over my chest to mimic a corpse in a coffin and used diaphragmatic breathing. I said a quick prayer to Ereshkigal, Sumerian Goddess of the underworld, and asked for permission to enter. I heard her say that I could not enter the underworld and return but that I could meet her on the border between life and death. I agreed. I astral projected and found a door to the border. I found myself on a beautiful grassy field beside a palace surrounded by rotting corpses. We walked along the border and had a lovely talk about life and death. I struggled with staying in astral form while simultaneously struggling to stay awake. It was tough maintaining just the right level of consciousness. I started to fall asleep for a few seconds on several occasions and felt pulled back into my body quite a few times as well but I managed to resist both urges over the 30 minutes. I came back feeling more relaxed and at peace than I have in a long time. It was a wonderful visit!
